Addressing some misconceptions about the roughening—or “hacking”—of roads after asphalt laying, the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) explained that roads handling heavy traffic are constructed with multiple layers of asphalt to withstand heavy loads and prevent structural damage.
A CBC technical expert elaborated on why Khayaban-e-Ittehad Road was roughened after the first layer of asphalt. He explained that the road consists of two layers: the asphalt base course and the asphalt wearing course.
Since Khayaban-e-Ittehad handles heavy traffic, including dumper trucks and water tankers, this technique is necessary to ensure the road can bear proper axle loads. After the first layer is laid, the road is temporarily opened to traffic. Later, the surface is roughened again before the second layer is applied, ensuring better bonding and a stronger grip between layers.
